Alpine Pedal Path

Alpine Pedal Path Trail 1E50, 740 Stanfield Cutoff, Big Bear Lake, California 92314

(909) 382-2790

The Alpine Pedal Path hugs the north shore of Big Bear Lake and stretches from the Stanfield Cutoff westward past the Solar Observatory—a flat, easy route that works equally well for walkers, joggers, skaters, and anyone pushing a stroller or using a wheelchair. This accessibility is genuinely useful if you’re traveling with kids or older family members alongside your dog, since everyone can move at their own pace without anyone feeling left behind.

The path takes you under Highway 38 via a pedestrian tunnel on North Shore Drive, which brings you to the Cougar Crest Trailhead parking area. From there, an additional 0.6-mile section extends eastward toward the Big Bear Discovery Center, so you can easily make the walk as short or long as you want depending on your dog’s energy level and the weather.

What made our visit memorable wasn’t just the easy terrain—it was spotting bald eagles. The San Bernardino Mountains host the largest wintering bald eagle population in Southern California, and these birds typically show up from late November through early April. We weren’t expecting to see any during our visit, but there they were, soaring overhead or perched in trees near the water. It’s the kind of moment that makes you stop and just watch for a while. Your dog might be more interested in the scents along the shoreline, but if you’re into birds, this is genuinely worth timing your trip for eagle season.

The path itself is well-maintained and gets decent foot traffic, so you won’t feel isolated. Bring water—the elevation at Big Bear means the sun feels stronger than you’d expect, and there’s not much shade along the flatter sections. Parking at either end is straightforward, which matters when you’re coordinating a dog outing with other people’s schedules.
