Aspen Glen Picnic Area is a shaded day-use site in the San Bernardino National Forest, located just west of the Village in Big Bear Lake on Mill Creek Road. Tall pines provide generous shade over picnic tables, barbecue grills, and a community fire ring—the kind of setup that makes sense when you’ve got a dog who needs a break from the sun. The area feels less crowded than some of the more developed spots around Big Bear, which your dog will probably appreciate.
Dogs are welcome at Aspen Glen and must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet, per national forest regulations. If your dog has the energy for it, the Pine Knot Trail trailhead starts right here. It’s a popular 6.1-mile out-and-back hike through the forest that’s accessible from March through November and fully dog-friendly on leash. The trail climbs steadily through mixed pine forest, so it’s a real workout rather than a casual stroll. After you’re done hiking, the shaded picnic area is a solid place to decompress, eat lunch, and let your dog rest in the cool shade before heading back.
The restrooms on-site don’t have running water, so bring what you and your dog might need. An Adventure Pass is required to park here—$5 for a day pass or $30 for the year—and you can purchase it at the entrance. The picnic area is day-use only, so you won’t be staying overnight. In winter, Aspen Glen transforms into a snow-play area, so if you visit during those months the vibe is pretty different from the hiking season. Check the Forest Service website for current hours and seasonal availability before you go, especially if you’re planning a winter visit.
