Big Meadow Trailhead to Big Meadow is a 1.4 mile round trip hike rated easy, making it a solid choice if you’re spending time in South Lake Tahoe and want a quick outing with your dog. The trailhead sits on the north side of Highway 89, about five miles south of US 50. The hike opens to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, so you might encounter any of those on the trail.
From the parking lot, you’ll walk about 200 yards to Highway 89. Cross carefully—watch for the trail marker on the south side. Once across, the path climbs somewhat steeply over rocky ground through a thick forest of Jeffrey pine, western white pine, and fir trees. Your dog will appreciate the shade here.
After 0.2 miles, Big Meadow Creek comes into view on your left—a substantial stream with massive granite boulders and aspen trees framing the water. It’s a nice spot to let your dog get a drink if they need one. The trail continues another 0.1 miles before flattening out at a junction. Stay straight on the TRT (Tahoe Rim Trail).
The payoff comes when you reach Big Meadow itself, where you get solid views of the surrounding mountains. There are plenty of spots to sit with your dog and have lunch, though staying on the trail keeps things clean and prevents damage to the meadow.
One thing to note: if you’re a mountain biker, the TRT meets up with the Pacific Crest Trail in 4.9 miles, and bikes aren’t allowed on the PCT, so plan accordingly. The trail is accessible year-round depending on snow conditions, so check on current conditions before heading out if you’re going in winter or early spring.
