Big River State Beach

Big River State Beach

Big River State Beach

Big River Rd., Mendocino, California 95460

Big River State Beach sits on Mendocino’s south side, just a couple miles north of Little River, and dogs are allowed on the west side of the beach where they can actually run in the sand and splash in the surf. You can drive straight from Highway 1 to the parking area, or take scenic trails down from the bluffs if you want a more gradual approach—the trailhead access gives you options depending on how much walking you’re in the mood for.

The beach itself has a relaxed vibe. You’ll see plenty of driftwood scattered around, which works great for a game of fetch if your dog is into that. The paved path along the beach is leash-required, and dogs need to stay on a leash no longer than six feet, which keeps things manageable for everyone including people who aren’t comfortable around larger dogs. Restrooms and ample parking are right there, so logistics are straightforward.

If you want to venture beyond the beach proper, the Big River Trail branches off from here and winds through the estuary with good views of the landscape. You might spot seals or otters along the water depending on the time of day. The Big River Estuary itself is calm enough for kayaking if that’s something you’re interested in doing separately. Some people like to spend an hour at the beach and then take a longer walk the trail to make a full afternoon of it.

The whole setup works whether you’re looking for just a quick beach break off Highway 1 or planning to spend most of the day there. The west side of the beach is genuinely dog-friendly rather than grudgingly tolerant, so your dog will have actual room to move around. Just remember the six-foot leash requirement stays in effect on the beach and along the path—enforcement varies but the rule is there for a reason with mixed-use areas like this.
