The Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail offers those interested in viewing wildlife a unique opportunity to see a new side of Bodega Bay. The Sonoma County Regional Parks Department has revitalized a saltwater marsh adjacent to the Bird Walk that is home to thousands of birds throughout the year. The Bird Walk Coastal Access contains 1.19 miles of trail that circles two ponds and offers coastal views along with excellent birding opportunities.

After a brief rise from the parking lot, this gentle trail system has a gravel surface that is moderately accessible to wheelchairs. The terrain stays manageable even when wet, which matters in this part of Sonoma County where fog and drizzle are common. The two ponds you’ll loop around attract egrets, herons, and various shorebirds depending on the season. Winter brings different species than summer, so repeat visits reveal changes in the marsh ecosystem. On clear days the coast becomes visible as you progress, and you can see across Bodega Bay toward the open ocean.

The Cheney Creek Bridge Trail connects Birdwalk Coastal Access to Doran Regional Park, expanding your options if you want a longer outing. You can access the trail either from the parking lot located off Highway 1 at the south end of Bodega Bay, or from the southern trailhead at the northeastern boundary of Doran Beach Park. Starting from Doran lets you walk northward into Bird Walk if you prefer that direction.

Your dog needs to stay leashed throughout and must be licensed. The gravel surface is easy on paws, and the marsh setting means you’ll encounter other dogs whose owners are equally interested in the birds and water views. Bring binoculars if you’re serious about identifying the wading birds—you’ll spot plenty even without them, but the marsh really comes alive when you can see details.
