Bonita Falls Trail in Lytle Creek is a solid choice if you want a waterfall hike that actually gets you to water without eating up your whole day. The 1.6-mile out and back route takes about an hour and a half round trip, depending on how much you linger at the falls, and it’s moderate enough that most dogs handle it without drama.
The trail runs November through June, which is actually smart timing—you avoid the scorching summer months and the creek has actual flow from snowmelt. The path itself is well-maintained and stays relatively clear even when conditions are less than perfect. You’ll hear the water getting louder as you approach, which is a good sign you’re close. The waterfall at the end is real and worth the walk, with a small pool where dogs can cool off if they want.
I took my dog on a November afternoon and the temperature was perfect for hiking. The trail isn’t crowded, though you might see other hikers on weekends. The moderate rating is honest—there’s some elevation gain and uneven footing in spots, but nothing that requires special equipment or training. Beginners with decent fitness can absolutely do this.
Dogs are welcome on leash, and you’ll want to keep yours close on the steeper sections and near the water. The creek is visible in places, and some dogs get distracted trying to wade in stream crossings, so stay alert. Bring enough water for yourself since there’s no reliable water source along the way until you reach the falls, and bring a way to carry out anything you carry in.
The trailhead is accessed via Lytle Creek Road in San Bernardino County. Check conditions before heading out, especially earlier in the season when there might be washout sections. November through January tends to have the best flow and most pleasant weather for the hike.
