Captain's Anchorage has been a Big Bear Lake fixture since 1947, and it’s one of the few places up here where you can get a proper cocktail with dinner. The lodge-style building fits right into the mountain setting, and the kitchen takes its time with slow-roasted prime rib and fresh seafood that actually tastes like someone cared. The chowders are hearty enough to warm you up after a day on the lake, and if you’re sharing a meal, the signature “Shipwreck” dessert is legitimately impressive — the kind of thing you’ll remember.
The patio is where you’ll want to sit if the weather cooperates. You get actual views of the surrounding mountains, especially nice if you time it for sunset, and they have patio seating where dogs are welcome. There’s a full bar with an extensive wine list, which matters more than you’d think in a mountain town like this.
Hours are 4:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The place gets busy on weekends, so it’s worth making a reservation ahead of time — you don’t want to drive up the mountain and find yourself waiting. Dog policies can shift depending on the season and how busy they are, so check ahead about current seating arrangements on the patio. Moonridge Way is just a short drive from the heart of Big Bear village, making it easy to reach after a day of hiking or exploring around the lake.
