Big Bear Lake has many trails, the most popular of which is the Castle Rock Trail. The Castle Rock Trailhead is conveniently located 1.1 miles east of Big Bear Dam on State Highway 18, or 3 miles west of Big Bear Lake Village. There’s parking available 50 yards east of the trailhead, on the north side of the highway, and you won’t need an Adventure Pass to park here. Look for the small sign that marks the entrance to the Castle Rock Trailhead across the highway.
The trail isn’t long, but it offers a rewarding challenge with an elevation gain of 500 feet. The initial 0.5 mile is a steep climb—the kind that gets your heart pumping pretty quickly—which then transitions into a less steep path for the next 0.5 mile. The steeper section at the start means your dog will feel it too, so bring water and plan for a slower pace if your dog isn’t used to elevation. The payoff is worth the effort though.
As you make your way up, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the lake and the surrounding forests of pines, white firs, and cedars. The forest canopy provides good shade for most of the hike, which matters since Big Bear sits at around 7,000 feet elevation and the sun can feel intense. Dogs are welcome to join this hike, making it a great opportunity for your dog to explore the outdoors with you. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with some rocky sections near the top, so watch your dog’s footing on the descent if they’re not used to rocky terrain.
Most people finish this hike in about 90 minutes round trip, though that varies depending on your dog’s fitness level and how often you stop for breaks. It’s a solid half-day outing that doesn’t require reservations or permits. The parking area fills up on weekends, so try to arrive early if you’re visiting during peak season.
