The Children's Forest Exploration Trail (2W09X) is a family-friendly 4.5-mile trail within the National Children’s Forest near Running Springs, located along Highway 18 just east of Highway 330. It winds through impressive stands of large pines with views of nearby peaks and offers something for different ability levels in one outing.
The trail is split into two sections. A paved three-quarter-mile interpretive loop makes up the first part and is accessible for all skill levels—this is where you’ll find the easiest walking and the most informational signage. If you want more distance, the full trail continues with a gentle 12% grade that provides a satisfying workout without being overly strenuous.
Dogs are welcome and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet, per San Bernardino National Forest regulations. The shaded forest canopy keeps the path cool even on warm days, and the well-maintained surface is easy on paws. We found the shade especially valuable on warmer afternoons—it makes a real difference in how comfortable your dog stays during the hike.
This is a popular spot for school groups and families, so expect company on weekends during the warmer months. That means the trail gets good foot traffic and tends to be well-maintained, but it also means quieter weekday visits offer a more peaceful experience if you can manage it.
Parking is at the Children’s Forest Visitor Center, adjacent to Deerlick Fire Station. You’ll need a National Forest Adventure Pass ($5/day or $30/year). The visitor center is open weekends from May through September. The trail is best from late spring through fall when conditions are dry and the forest is lush. Call ahead if you’re planning a weekend trip during peak season, as the parking lot can fill up.
