Cuyamaca Ranch State Park in Descanso spreads across over 25,000 acres in the foothills east of San Diego, and it’s genuinely one of the better places to bring your dog for a full day or weekend trip. The landscape changes as you gain elevation—you’ll move through oak woodland and into pine groves, with meadows and creeks scattered throughout. The park has well over 100 miles of trails, so whether you want a short walk or a serious hike, you can find something that matches your dog’s fitness level and your own.

Dogs on leash are welcome on most trails here. The park leans toward a natural experience without a lot of development, which means you’re not dodging crowds or fighting for parking space on most days. You’ll see some real elevation change depending on which trail you pick, and the cooler temps at altitude are actually nice if you’re visiting in summer.

If you want to camp with your dog, the park has two family campgrounds—Paso Picacho and Green Valley. Both allow leashed dogs, so your dog can come along for the full experience rather than staying home. Camping here feels genuinely rustic; you get picnic tables, fire rings, and access to the trail system right from your site. The pine smell and quiet are worth it if you want to escape San Diego proper for a night.

The park does have some restrictions worth knowing about—certain trails close seasonally, and you should check conditions before heading out, especially if you’re planning a longer hike. Water sources exist in the park, but don’t count on them in dry months. Bring enough water for both you and your dog. The drive from downtown San Diego takes about an hour, so it works well as either a day trip or an overnight getaway.
