Derby Park

508 Woodland Way, Santa Cruz, California 95060

(831) 420-5270

Derby Park in Santa Cruz has a legitimate claim to skateboard history—it was one of the first public skateboard parks in the country, and you can still see the concrete bowls and transitions that made it notable. These days it’s a genuinely mixed-use space where you’ll find everything from skaters carving the bowls to families on the open field to kids climbing on the playground equipment.

The park itself is substantial, with enough room that you won’t feel crowded even when multiple activities are happening. Beyond the signature skateboard features, there are two tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, and plenty of wide-open grassy areas. The pathways are well-maintained and give you good options for walking your dog without constantly dodging people or equipment.

Dogs on leash are welcome here, which makes it a practical stop if you’re exploring Santa Cruz’s parks. The open field area is genuinely useful for giving your dog space to move around, and the tree coverage in parts of the park provides some shade on warmer days. It’s not a dog park with off-leash areas, so you’re managing a leashed walk, but the park is large enough that this doesn’t feel restrictive. The mix of paved and grassy surfaces means you can choose what works best for your dog’s comfort.

The location works well if you’re already in Santa Cruz and want to combine some outdoor time with checking out a piece of local skateboard culture. It’s the kind of place where you might spend twenty minutes or a couple of hours depending on what else is happening around the city. Your dog will get decent exercise from the walking paths, and you’ll have a sense of what made this park significant to the skateboarding community.
