The Eagle Lake Recreation Trail offers an engaging journey through the scenic beauty of pine and sagebrush landscapes along the southern edge of California’s second largest natural lake. Located in the Lassen National Forest near Susanville, this trail extends just over 5 miles, connecting Christie Campground to the Eagle Lake Marina, making it a solid choice for a day out with your dog without committing to an all-day expedition.
The trail winds through terrain where you’ll regularly spot wildlife—eagles, ospreys, pelicans, and great blue herons are common sightings along the water, and you might see deer, antelope, coyotes, and rabbits moving through the sagebrush. Even if dramatic wildlife encounters don’t happen, the lake views alone make the walk worthwhile, and the relatively gentle terrain means most dogs handle it without issue. The pine-scented air and the sound of water lapping against the shore create a genuinely peaceful atmosphere that feels removed from the typical day.
Practical details matter here. Drinking water and restrooms are available at campgrounds along the route, so you can break up the walk if needed. The Eagle Lake Marina at the trail’s end has food available if you want to grab something after the hike—useful if you’ve brought your dog and realize you’re hungrier than expected. The trail works well as an out-and-back walk too, so you don’t have to commit to the full 5 miles if your dog (or you) gets tired halfway through.
You can park at either Eagle Lake Marina or Christie Campground, depending on which direction you want to walk. The campgrounds themselves are worth exploring if you decide to make this an overnight trip, though the day hike is equally rewarding. The landscape changes subtly as you move along the lake, so even the return walk feels slightly different from the way out.
