Merrill Campground sits within the Eagle Lake Recreation Area in Lassen National Forest, about twenty minutes northeast of Susanville. It’s one of five campgrounds in the area, and unlike some Forest Service spots that are restrictive about dogs, this one welcomes them to camp alongside you.
The campground itself was completely rebuilt in the early 2000s and functions more like a modern RV park than a typical rustic forest facility. You’ll find 57 full hook-up sites, 64 with partial hook-ups (water and electric), and 51 standard sites with no utilities. All the parking spurs are generously sized—at least 45 feet, though most stretch to 55 or 75 feet—so you won’t feel cramped. Each site comes with a picnic table and a fire ring with grill.
The amenities work well for longer stays. There are flush toilets throughout, potable water stations, grey water dumps, and limited WiFi. Firewood is available for purchase if you want a campfire. If you’re running an RV, there’s a separate dump station just outside the campground entrance with a $10 fee.
Beyond the campground itself, you’ve got plenty to explore. A 5.2-mile paved trail connects Merrill to three day-use areas and the marina on Eagle Lake’s southern shore, making it easy to bike or walk around without getting back in the car. The Osprey Overlook is worth the trip—whether you drive or hike up—for views across the southern tip of Eagle Lake and the surrounding forest. The whole area feels less crowded than some California lake destinations, which works nicely if you’re camping with a dog who prefers quieter stretches.
