Field of Dogs is a proper off-leash park spread across several acres of open grassland with the kind of room that lets dogs actually run instead of circle nervously around a handful of trees. The space divides into a larger area for standard dogs and a separate smaller-dog section, so you’re not watching a sixty-pound lab barrel past your ten-pound terrier every thirty seconds. The ground is mostly grass with some decomposed granite, which drains reasonably well even after rain, though it can get muddy near the water trough during wet months.
Dogs are off-leash throughout the fenced grounds, and there are no day-pass fees or membership requirements—you just show up. The park operates dawn to dusk, and like most off-leash spaces in Marin, it draws its steadiest crowds in early morning and late afternoon. Midday tends quieter, which matters if your dog prefers calmer interactions. Water is available via the trough system scattered across the property, so bring a collapsible bowl if you want to offer your dog a drink away from the communal setup. Shade comes from scattered mature trees and some covered picnic areas on the perimeter, but the open grassland means there are stretches with no cover—a real consideration on hot days.
The park sits in San Rafael’s residential area with street parking nearby, and the terrain is flat throughout, making it accessible for most dogs regardless of age or fitness level. The fencing is solid and regularly maintained, which matters when you’re dealing with an escape artist. Hours don’t shift seasonally, so the dawn-to-dusk schedule holds year-round. Bring waste bags—there are some dispensers around the park, but don’t count on finding one when you need it most. The site is actually run by a nonprofit, which means upkeep depends partly on volunteer effort, so the conditions can vary week to week depending on recent maintenance.
