Furlong Gulch

Hwy. 1 and Carlevaro Way, Sonoma Coast State Park, Bodega Bay, California 94923

Long sandy beaches stretch below rugged headlands along this section of Sonoma Coast State Park, where a craggy coastline with natural arches and secluded coves makes the area one of California’s most visually striking stretches. Furlong Gulch is actually part of a series of beaches separated by rock bluffs and headlands that extends 17 miles from Bodega Head to Vista Trail, located 4 miles north of Jenner. You can access the beach from more than a dozen points along Highway 1, making it easy to find your own spot depending on what you’re after.

The setting works well whether you want to beachcomb, fish, sunbathe, or just picnic while your dog explores the sand and tide pools. The north coast weather can turn foggy in summer, but it typically burns off by midday, leaving cool ocean breezes that actually make the heat manageable—a real bonus if you’re trying to escape the baking temperatures inland.

What makes Furlong Gulch particularly good for dogs is the straightforward access and the natural character of the place. The bluffs provide some shelter from wind, and the varied terrain keeps things interesting as you walk. The cool water and sand are appealing even to dogs who aren’t normally excited about swimming. Keep in mind that dogs must stay on a 6-foot maximum leash, which is a reasonable trade-off for access to this stretch of coast. The area between Jenner and Bodega Bay on Highway 1 is worth exploring at different times of day—the light changes dramatically, and the crowds thin out considerably by late afternoon. Parking spots can be tight during peak summer weekends, so arriving early improves your chances of finding a spot close to the beach access.
