Hanna Flat Campground is a forested campground in the San Bernardino National Forest, located about two miles off Highway 38 north of Fawnskin on the quiet side of Big Bear Lake. The setting feels genuinely removed from the tourist bustle—you’re dealing with Jeffrey pines, elevation around 7,000 feet, and a more peaceful vibe than what you’ll find at campgrounds closer to town. The campground offers over 80 single-family sites for tent and RV camping, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and bear box. Vault toilets and trash collection are provided, though potable water isn’t available, so you’ll need to bring your own supply for both you and your dog.

Dogs are welcome and must stay on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. The location works well if you want a quieter base for exploring the area. Several hiking and biking trails are accessible nearby—the 3.5-mile Grays Peak Trail is a solid on-leash option that gives you both a real workout without requiring a drive to a trailhead.

Getting here involves a two-mile unpaved forest road (3N14) that’s generally passable for standard vehicles in dry conditions, though you’ll want to check conditions before showing up with an RV. The campground is typically open from mid-April through the end of October. Fees range from approximately $33 to $65 per night, with extra vehicles at $8. Some sites accept reservations through Recreation.gov, while others operate first-come, first-served. If you’re planning a specific weekend during peak season, calling ahead makes sense—the quieter reputation means spots do fill up, and you’ll want to confirm whether that unpaved road is in good shape after recent weather before you head in with your rig.
