Indian Pools along Big Creek in Fresno County is one of those places where you can actually let your dog do what dogs love most—jump in water and splash around without worrying about it. The trailhead is less than a mile long and starts right from the China Peak Ski Area parking lot, so there’s no complicated navigation involved.

Walking the path, you’ll hear Big Creek running alongside you the whole way, and the creek creates multiple swimming holes and wading spots that are perfect for dogs. The water pools up in several places, so your dog can wade in shallow sections or plunge into deeper areas depending on what they prefer. There are large boulders scattered throughout that make good spots to sit and watch your dog cool off, or to give yourself a breather if you want to stay longer than just a quick dip.

The trail keeps going upstream if you want more adventure, leading to quieter pools that see fewer people. The wider open spaces along the creek mean your dog has room to move around and explore without feeling confined. It’s genuinely peaceful back there—just the sound of water and trees.

Bring more water than you think you’ll need since there’s nothing for sale nearby, and pack waste bags so you can leave no trace. The trail itself is well-maintained and easy to navigate, but conditions can change depending on recent weather and water flow. If you’re planning a visit during peak season or after heavy rain, it’s worth calling ahead to check on current conditions and any temporary closures. The creek can run high enough that some of the easier crossing spots become trickier, so knowing conditions beforehand helps you plan the right shoes and approach.
