John Bull Loop trail

Van Dusen Canyon Road & 3N09, Big Bear, California 92314

(909) 382-2790

The John Bull Loop trail near Big Bear is a solid 6-mile off-road ride that’ll test your skills if you’ve got some experience under your belt. You start at Van Dusen Canyon Road (3N09) and head up 3.5 miles into Holcomb Valley, where the terrain gets progressively more interesting. The trail winds through dense pine forest mixed with open meadows, so you get decent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as you work your way around.

This is genuinely technical stuff—rocky pathways, steep climbs, and obstacles that demand your full attention. If you’re the type who enjoys a challenge and knows how to handle your vehicle on uneven ground, you’ll find it rewarding. The forest canopy keeps things reasonably cool even in summer, though the elevation (you’re at about 7,000 feet) means it can get chilly quickly once the sun drops.

The route itself follows a logical loop: from Van Dusen Canyon you take 3N16 toward Holcomb Valley, then 3N07, then 3N43 into the John Bull Trail proper (3N10). You’ll spend about 3 miles on the more technical sections before hitting 3N32, where you turn right back toward 3N16. Another right on 3N09 brings you home.

Go early in the day if you can—the parking area at Van Dusen Canyon gets busy on weekends, especially during summer and fall. Bring plenty of water and snacks because once you’re out there, you’re committed to the loop. The trail condition varies depending on recent weather, so check current reports before heading up. Bring a map or download the route beforehand since cell service is spotty at elevation.
