Juniper Point Picnic Area sits on the north shore of Big Bear Lake along North Shore Drive near Fawnskin, and it’s one of those straightforward spots where you can throw down a picnic blanket without feeling like you need to plan an expedition. The setup is practical: shaded picnic tables scattered among the pines, charcoal grills if you want to cook, and vault toilets. The lake views are nice, though the main draw here is really the low-key vibe and what comes next — direct access to the Alpine Pedal Path, a paved multi-use trail that runs along the entire north shore. If your dog walks reasonably well on pavement, this trail is genuinely convenient for getting some mileage in without scrambling over uneven ground.
Dogs need to stay on a leash no longer than six feet, which is standard for the San Bernardino National Forest. The big thing to remember is bringing your own water for your dog since there aren’t fountains on-site. The picnic area itself is open seasonally from around April 1 through December 1 — the closure protects bald eagle nesting habitat, which honestly makes the timing work nicely if you’re planning a warmer-weather trip.
You’ll need an Adventure Pass to park here, either a daily pass for five dollars or an annual pass for thirty dollars. You can grab one at the Big Bear Discovery Center or online before you go. There’s a parking lot with regular vehicle access, so no high-clearance nonsense. This is the kind of place where you’d pack some sandwiches, let your dog stretch their legs on the paved trail, and call it a solid half-day outing without it turning into a whole production. Check the Forest Service site for current conditions before heading out, especially if you’re going early or late in the season.
