Kate's Lazy Desert Airstream Motel is the California outpost of Kate’s Lazy Meadow, an upstate New York “village” of renovated Airstream trailers that Travel & Leisure magazine and the Sunday Times of London named among the 100 best hotels in the world. Both are owned by Kate Pierson of the B-52s, and the Joshua Tree version features six vintage Airstreams restored to wacky perfection by artists Maberry-Walker, whose house is featured in the band’s “Love Shack” video.
Staying here is genuinely quirky in the best way. Each Airstream accommodates two adults only with one double bed, so it’s intimate and a bit retro-futuristic in feel. You get a hammock outside, a little barbecue grill, a coffee maker, and basic cooking utensils—enough to make coffee and simple meals without feeling like you’re roughing it. The trailers are scattered across the desert property, so there’s real space between you and other guests.
Dogs are welcome in three of the units for $25 per night. The management prefers smaller dogs, so if yours is a larger breed, call ahead to discuss whether your dog would be a good fit before booking. The desert property gives your dog room to move around, though you’ll want to keep an eye out for the occasional lizard or desert critter. The open desert landscape means wide-open skies at night—it’s darker out here than in town, so stargazing is legitimately good.
This place works best if you want something with personality and don’t mind staying in something small and unconventional. It’s close enough to Joshua Tree National Park and town, but far enough out that you feel like you’ve actually gotten away. The vibe is art-forward and playful rather than luxurious, which is part of the charm. Call for specific directions to the property before you head out.
