Lake Pillsbury is a unique place to visit with your dog in Lake County. This reservoir, surrounded by the Mendocino National Forest, provides a setting for serious outdoor activities. The lake, formed by the Scott Dam on the Eel River, spans over 2,000 acres and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and wildlife observation. The area is known for its varied landscapes, from rolling hills to dense forests, making it a genuinely scenic spot for nature lovers and their dogs.
The extensive network of trails around the lake offers excellent hiking opportunities for both dogs and owners. We found the terrain manageable for dogs of different fitness levels, though some paths get rocky and steep in sections. The designated picnic areas and campgrounds allow dogs, so you can set up for the day or stay overnight without leaving your dog behind. The grounds stay relatively quiet even on weekends, which means more space to roam.
Dogs are permitted to swim in the lake’s designated areas, and the water stays clear enough for decent visibility. The calm conditions make it a safer option than ocean swimming if your dog isn’t an experienced swimmer. Boating enthusiasts will find that their dogs are welcome on the water, provided they’re kept safe and secure. The calm waters work well for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding with a dog, though you’ll want to bring a properly fitted life jacket—your dog’s balance on a small boat matters more than you’d think.
Parking areas have easy access to the water’s edge and trail heads, so you won’t need to haul your dog far before hitting the good stuff. Bring plenty of fresh water since the lake water isn’t potable, and the nearest services are back in Lakeport. Late spring through early fall offers the best weather for a full day here.
