Little Green Valley Hike 2N19

Forest Route 2N19, Big Bear, Big Bear City, California 92314

Little Green Valley sits at about 7,100 feet on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains, a string of pine-ringed meadows along Forest Service Road 2N19 above Big Bear Lake. It is a dispersed area with no developed facilities — just the forest road, the meadows, a few unmaintained campsites among the pines, and seasonal creeks that run through the valley floor after winter snow melts. In June and July, the grasses fill with lupine, paintbrush, and corn lily, and mule deer move through the clearings at first and last light.

Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the San Bernardino National Forest, including Little Green Valley and every dispersed campsite off 2N19. The elevation keeps temperatures cooler than Big Bear proper — expect highs around 75°F in summer and lows in the 30s overnight. Afternoon storms build up most summer days; pine needles make soft trail surfaces underfoot, though loose granite on the road shoulders can be rough on paws over long walks. Pack water for your dog — there is no reliable source up here during dry months.

Forest Service Road 2N19 leaves Highway 18 near the Big Bear Discovery Center and climbs north into the valley. The first couple of miles are passable in a standard passenger vehicle, but high-clearance helps for the upper stretches and any spur roads. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required if you park in developed day-use areas along 18, though dispersed parking along 2N19 itself is free. Cell service cuts out about a half-mile in from Highway 18.
