The McCloud Hotel sits on a slope with views toward Mount Shasta, and it’s got real history—built in 1915 by the McCloud River Lumber Company as housing for the mill workers. Walking through the restored building, you can still feel that timber-era character, but the rooms have been updated for actual comfort. The McCloud River, famous for fly fishing, is a few miles away and includes three waterfalls if you want to explore that direction.
Dogs do well here. There’s a designated potty area with waste bag dispensers, and across the street is a field where you can let your dog burn off some energy. The location works nicely if you’re using McCloud as a base for hiking and exploring the Mount Shasta area—there’s a lot within reasonable driving distance, and you won’t feel like you’re staying in some generic chain motel.
The hotel includes a hearty breakfast, which is helpful since dining options in McCloud are limited. The staff clearly cares about maintaining the place’s character while making it functional for modern travelers. Rooms offer privacy and quiet, which is a nice change if you’re traveling with a dog who prefers calm surroundings over bustling hotel corridors.
McCloud itself is a small town, so expect a slower pace. That’s actually part of the appeal if you’re coming to decompress. If your dog is used to more stimulation, you’ll want to plan some actual activity—the river area and surrounding forest trails are where the real appeal is. The potty field across the street keeps things manageable for dogs on the property, so you’re not stressed about basic needs being met during your stay.
The historic McCloud Hotel has hosted anglers since 1916, and we feature it in our Father’s Day dog-friendly trips guide as the Shasta Cascade pick for fly-fishing dads.
