Meadows Edge Picnic Area is a peaceful day-use site on the north shore of Big Bear Lake, located along Highway 38 about two miles east of Fawnskin, adjacent to Serrano Campground. The setting feels genuinely quiet—you won’t find the crowds that gather at the more popular south-shore parks.
The layout works well for dogs. Picnic tables with barbecue grills sit throughout the area, and there are boardwalks that extend out over the meadows, giving you views of the lake and the surrounding mountains without having to navigate uneven ground. Dogs are welcome here and must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet per San Bernardino National Forest regulations. The boardwalks themselves are smooth and easy for walking, and the nearby paved Alpine Pedal Path runs along the north shore if you want to extend your outing beyond the picnic area.
The meadow setting means your dog won’t be dealing with a chaotic environment. If your dog prefers quieter outings without a lot of activity and noise around them, this is a better choice than many of the more developed Big Bear spots. You’ll have space to breathe here.
The area has flush toilets and standard picnic facilities. There are also grills if you want to cook something while you’re there. An Adventure Pass is required for parking—either $5 for a day pass or $30 for an annual pass.
One important thing to know: the picnic area is open seasonally from approximately April 1 through December 1. This closure protects bald eagle nesting habitat in the area. The exact hours and current conditions can change, so it’s worth checking the Forest Service listing or calling the Big Bear Discovery Center before you head out.
