Mitchell’s Cove Beach

West Cliff Dr. and Almar Ave., Santa Cruz, California 95060

Mitchell’s Cove Beach in Santa Cruz sits right along the Pacific with dramatic cliffs and tide pools that make it feel more removed from the main tourist crowds than some nearby beaches. The City of Santa Cruz allows leashed dogs here anytime, but the real appeal is the off-leash hours from sunrise to 10 a.m. and again from 4 p.m. until sunset—enough flexibility that you can catch either an early morning run or an evening session.

The cove itself has natural rock formations that create little pockets of calmer water, which is nice if your dog isn’t the strongest swimmer. You’ll see other people with dogs most days, especially during those off-leash windows, so it’s a decent spot for dogs that enjoy socializing. The sand is decent for digging, and the waves are generally manageable, though you’ll want to keep an eye on the tide since the beach is more compact than some others in the area.

One thing that stands out is how the surrounding cliffs create a natural windbreak, so even on breezy days it can feel relatively sheltered down on the sand. There are informal trails along the bluff top if you want to extend your visit beyond just beach time. The water gets genuinely cold, so your dog will let you know pretty quickly when they’ve had enough of the ocean.

Parking is street parking along the residential area leading to the cove, which can fill up on nice weekends. It’s worth getting there earlier rather than later, especially during those prime morning off-leash hours. There aren’t amenities like restrooms or showers right at the beach, so bring what you need. The nearest actual facilities are back toward the main Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk area, which is a short drive away if you need to rinse off afterward.
