The Modoc National Forest spreads across northeastern California near Alturas, offering genuine outdoor adventure if you’re willing to drive a bit from the valley floor. Dogs are welcome on most trails here, which makes sense given the wide-open terrain and relatively low foot traffic compared to forests closer to the Bay Area.
The campgrounds throughout the forest allow dogs, and you’ll find everything from developed sites with amenities to more primitive camping spots if you want solitude. South Fork Campground and Ash Creek Campground are popular choices where you can set up and use the forest as your base for daily explorations. Picnic areas scattered throughout also welcome dogs, so you can break up a day of hiking with lunch at a shaded table.
Trail options vary considerably depending which part of the forest you explore. The higher elevation areas tend to stay cooler in summer, which your dog will appreciate. You’ll encounter volcanic rock formations, pine forests, and meadows depending on where you wander. The terrain can be rough in spots, so bring plenty of water and watch for sharp lava rock that can be tough on paws.
The forest sits at elevation, so even summer days cool down significantly at night. This actually works in your favor if you’re visiting with a dog—the lower temperatures make hiking much more comfortable than in the scorching valleys below.
Keep in mind this is remote country. Cell service is spotty or nonexistent in many areas, so download maps ahead of time. The nearest town of any size is Alturas itself, which has supplies and services. Check current conditions and any fire restrictions before you go, since the forest occasionally closes sections during fire season. The solitude and space here appeal to people who want to get away from crowded parks, and most dogs seem to sense that difference.
