Moran Lake Park surrounds a lagoon in the Live Oak area of Santa Cruz, offering something different from the typical crowded beach scene. The park has its own parking area, restroom facilities, and a dirt trail running along the north side of the lagoon that’s perfect for a quick walk before heading to the water. The beach is really the main reason to come here though.

From the parking area, you’ll cross Cliff Drive to reach a small pocket beach sandwiched between homes on both sides. When the tide isn’t high, you can walk north along the rocky barriers that protect those homes until you reach the stretch of sand in front of Corcoran Lagoon. The beach here changes shape regularly depending on storms and how much water is flowing out from Moran Lake Lagoon itself, so it’s never quite the same visit twice.

Dogs are allowed on leash throughout the park and on the beach, and you’ll see locals out with their dogs regularly, which makes it feel like a neighborhood spot rather than a destination beach. The atmosphere is quieter and more low-key than you’d find at Main Beach or other Santa Cruz waterfront areas.

One important thing to watch for: don’t let your dog swim in the ocean water if the lagoon is actively flowing into the surf. When that outflow is happening, the water quality isn’t great. It’s worth checking the conditions before you head down to the sand, especially if your dog tends to be a swimmer. On the right day when the water looks clear and the tide cooperates, it’s a nice place to get some beach time without the typical Santa Cruz crowds.
