NorCal GSP Rescue is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted and abandoned German Shorthaired Pointers in northern California into new homes.

NorCal GSP Rescue takes in adoptable dogs from area shelters and fosters them in volunteer foster homes throughout Northern California. While their headquarters are in Menlo Park, California, they do not have a physical facility there.

By fostering dogs in homes they are able to save dogs’ lives and provide the public with healthy spayed or neutered dogs. The foster home provides a transition period between life in the animal shelter and the new, permanent home. The dogs are given the opportunity to learn any needed social skills and to receive the much-needed love, shelter, and medical care they deserve.

Founded in 1998 and incorporated as a non-profit in 2006, NorCal GSP Rescue has been a lifeline for German Shorthaired Pointers across Northern California for over two decades. The organization runs entirely on the dedication of volunteers who open their homes and hearts to dogs in need. Every GSP that comes into the rescue program receives comprehensive veterinary care including spaying or neutering, vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative treatment, intestinal parasite treatment, and any additional medical attention required. Dogs also receive positive reinforcement training and thorough behavior evaluations to ensure they are ready for their forever homes.

German Shorthaired Pointers are energetic, intelligent, and deeply loyal dogs that thrive with active families. They make wonderful companions for hikers, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts, and their affectionate nature means they bond closely with their people. However, their high energy and athleticism mean they are not the right fit for every household, which is why NorCal GSP Rescue takes the matching process seriously. The rescue carefully evaluates each dog’s temperament and each applicant’s lifestyle to create lasting, successful placements.

If you are interested in adopting a German Shorthaired Pointer, the process begins with completing an adoption questionnaire on the NorCal GSP Rescue website. An adoption coordinator will follow up within three to five days to discuss your application and learn more about your home environment. If a suitable GSP match is identified, the team will arrange a visit with the dog in their foster home so you can get to know each other. The rescue asks that families with children under six years of age wait to adopt, as most dogs come to them with unknown histories. You can also support the rescue by volunteering as a foster home, making a donation, or attending one of their community events. Visit norcalgsprescue.org or call (408) 402-2092 to learn more about how you can help give a deserving GSP a second chance at a happy life.
