The Polique Canyon Trailhead gives you access to a scenic stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail east of Big Bear Lake, and it’s one of those hikes where you can go as far as you want and turn back without committing to the full distance. The complete section runs roughly 13 miles from Polique Canyon Road to Holcomb Creek Road with about 640 feet of elevation gain, but plenty of people hike just a few miles in, enjoy the views, and head back. The trail climbs through pine forests between 5,500 and 7,500 feet, with rewarding high-desert and mountain views including glimpses of Mount Baldy and the San Gabriel range.
Dogs are allowed on this section of the PCT and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet per San Bernardino National Forest rules. Some stretches are sunny and exposed, so you’ll want to bring plenty of water and sun protection for both you and your dog. The trail surface is mostly dirt singletrack in good condition, so footing is solid and the moderate difficulty overall makes it manageable for dogs with decent endurance.
From Big Bear Lake, drive roughly 15 minutes east on Highway 38 and turn onto Polique Canyon Road to reach the trailhead. Parking is limited, and honestly, getting there early helps—especially on weekends. There’s a porta-potty at the trailhead and a National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parked vehicles. The trail is best from late spring through fall, when the path is clear and dry. If you go in the summer, start early to avoid the afternoon heat reflecting off exposed sections. The elevation means mornings are usually cool and pleasant, which your dog will appreciate while you’re climbing.
