Pebble Plains is one of the most ecologically unique destinations in the Big Bear area. Found only in the Big Bear Valley and Holcomb Valley, pebble plain habitats support rare wildflowers and endemic plant species that have adapted to harsh, rocky soil at around 6,750 feet elevation. Several accessible pebble plain sites are scattered around Moonridge and the south side of the valley, with interpretive trails that highlight these remarkable “belly plants” — wildflowers so small you may need to kneel down to appreciate them.

Dogs are permitted on pebble plain trails within the San Bernardino National Forest and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. The terrain is gentle and easy to walk, making this a good option for dogs of all ages and fitness levels. That said, staying on designated trails is important because the habitat here is genuinely fragile. The rocky soil that makes these wildflowers special is also surprisingly delicate, and off-trail walking can damage both the plants and the ground they grow in. Your dog’s paws matter too — keeping them on the path prevents trampling the very plants that make the area worth visiting.

The best time to visit is spring through early summer when the wildflowers bloom, typically April through June. During peak bloom in May, the usually sparse landscape transforms into a carpet of tiny flowers in purples, yellows, and whites. Nearby trailheads off Moonridge Road and Villa Grove Avenue provide access points that are easy to reach from town. No fee is required for most pebble plain trails, though a National Forest Adventure Pass may be needed depending on where you park. The Bear Valley Education Trust offers information about these protected habitats if you want to learn more before you go, which can help you spot some of the rarer species while you’re walking.
