Three miles north of Bodega Bay on Highway 1, Portuguese Beach stretches wide and sandy between dramatic coastal cliffs and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a genuinely spacious place—you won’t feel crowded even on decent weather days, which means plenty of room for your dog to move around without constantly dodging other visitors.
The beach itself is good for different kinds of exploration. You can walk the shoreline for miles if you want, wade into the surf, or pick through the rocks near the cliff edges if your dog enjoys that kind of investigating. Fishing enthusiasts regularly work the rocks and break, and there’s something satisfying about watching them while your dog sniffs around nearby. The sandy sections are firm enough for comfortable walking, and the water is cold like most Northern California beaches, so don’t expect your dog to stay in long unless they’re the type who loves it anyway.
The main appeal here is the sheer openness. There’s no feeling of being funneled through a parking lot or squeezed onto a narrow strip of sand. You get that real coastal vibe—wind, salt air, the sound of waves hitting the rocks. On clear days you can see down the coast quite a ways, and the light gets particularly nice in late afternoon.
Dogs are welcome as long as they’re under control, which at a beach this size isn’t hard to manage. Just watch for sneaker waves if your dog gets close to the water’s edge, and note that the parking area is a basic lot without many facilities, so bring water for both of you. The drive up Highway 1 to get there is nice on its own if you’re making a day of coastal exploration in Sonoma County.
