Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park spreads across nearly 14,000 acres of old-growth coast redwood forest in southern Humboldt County, with terrain that ranges from coastal bluffs and prairie grassland to dense redwood groves and creek bottoms. The landscape feels genuinely remote—herds of Roosevelt elk graze in the open meadows, particularly in the Gold Bluffs Beach area, and the tallest trees tower overhead so thickly that midday feels like dusk. The Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway winds through the heart of the redwoods with pullouts and short walks accessible from a vehicle. The paved, gentle drive itself welcomes leashed dogs. Gold Bluffs Beach provides sweeping ocean views and black-sand beaches backed by dramatic eroded cliffs. The park’s ecological significance lies in its intact old-growth redwood forest and Fern Canyon, a narrow gorge with 50-foot walls draped in five-finger ferns—one of the most photogenic spots in the state, though inaccessible with dogs.

Leashed dogs are welcome in the campgrounds, picnic areas, and on the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway itself. However, the extensive trail system—comprising roughly 75 miles of routes through old-growth forest, including popular hikes like Fern Canyon and the Tall Trees Loop—prohibits dogs. This restriction applies to nearly all unpaved paths, a standard California State Parks policy designed to protect wildlife and the redwood understory. Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, and marbled murrelets inhabit the park. A standard state park entrance fee applies.

The visitor center provides orientation and maps. Parking at popular trailheads fills quickly on weekends, especially in summer; the park’s narrow roads and high volume of foot traffic compound this congestion. Late spring or early fall offers mild weather and thinner crowds than midsummer. The campground is large and well-maintained with good spacing between sites, making it a solid base for a multi-day trip. The Coastal Trail north of Trinidad Head, about 30 minutes south, permits dogs on several sections of its terrace-level route and offers a nearby alternative for leashed trail walking.
