Just a short drive from Yosemite’s entrance, Queen’s Inn by the River sits right in Oakhurst along the Fresno River, making it a practical home base for exploring the Sierra Nevada with your dog. The inn started as a motor lodge back in 1951 and has been updated over the years while keeping that classic, welcoming feel. Eight rooms are available, and the setting genuinely works well for dogs—you get direct access to riverbank walks, which beats sitting in a hotel room after a full day of hiking.
The property’s real draw is how naturally the dog-friendly setup flows into the rest of the experience. There’s a wine and beer garden on-site where you can settle in with a local wine or craft beer while your dog hangs out beside you. The garden sources from Idle Hour Winery, Oakhurst’s first winery, which stocks nearly 100 wines and craft beers. During summer, the inn hosts live entertainment some evenings, so you might catch music or other events—it adds something to do beyond just planning your next trail.
The staff does ask that your dog be housebroken and friendly with people, and they want you to mention your dog’s temperament when booking so there are no surprises. You’ll need to handle cleanup during your stay, which is standard. The location works well logistically: you’re close enough to Yosemite to make day trips manageable, but far enough that you’re not dealing with park crowds or the noise of main tourist areas. The riverbank walks help tire out dogs in a low-key way before heading out for bigger adventures. Oakhurst itself is a small town with reasonable services, so grabbing dog food or supplies is straightforward. The combination of actual riverside access and a relaxed wine garden atmosphere makes this different from typical highway motels.
