Rancheria Falls

Big Creek, Big Creek, California 93605

Rancheria Falls is a stunning hiking destination in the picturesque wilderness of Big Creek, Fresno County. The well-maintained trail meanders alongside Rancheria Creek, gaining about 900 feet in elevation from the trailhead at 7,200 feet. Spanning approximately one mile each way, the walk works for hikers of all skill levels, featuring a gentle grade that allows for a leisurely pace.

The waterfall itself is the real draw here, particularly spectacular in late spring and early summer when it cascades down 150 feet into a ravine, creating a wide, 50-foot gush of water. There’s something compelling about standing at the base listening to that much water moving—your dog will feel it too, even if they’re not as impressed by the view.

Getting there is straightforward. Take Highway 168 toward Huntington Lake, and after passing the turnoff for China Peak Ski Resort, take a right onto Forest Service Road 8S31, also known as Rancheria Falls Road. The trailhead is just 1.2 miles down this road, where you’ll find parking and restrooms available.

The trail itself is relatively quiet, which is nice. You’ll move through forest and alongside the creek, with plenty of spots to stop if your dog needs a break or wants to cool off in the water. Keep in mind the stream water isn’t safe for drinking, so bring what you need from home.

As you hike, keep your dog leashed or under reliable voice control. The combination of a gentle trail, rushing water sounds, and the soothing forest makes this a solid choice for a half-day outing. The payoff—standing in front of a 150-foot waterfall—is worth the moderate walk uphill, especially on a warm day when the mist from the falls feels refreshing.
