Regan Memorial City Beach sits in one of South Lake Tahoe’s oldest neighborhoods, offering a genuinely low-key alternative to the more crowded stretches of shoreline. The beach splits into two distinct zones, and this split actually works well for planning your visit.
The east end is where dogs can have a real time in the water and sand. You’ll see dogs wading into Lake Tahoe’s clear waters and digging around in the beach itself—it’s a proper dog-friendly area, not just tolerant but actually designed for it. The water here is cold (it’s Lake Tahoe, after all), but most dogs don’t seem to mind, especially on a warm day. The sand gives way to rocky areas as you move toward the waterline, so watch your dog’s paws if they’re sensitive.
The west end has a grassy knoll that’s reserved for weddings and special events, and dogs aren’t allowed in that section. This separation actually keeps the experience quieter on the dog side—you’re not competing with event setup crews or formal gatherings while you’re trying to let your dog enjoy the beach. The grassy area itself is pretty, with views back across the water, but the dog zone is really the main draw anyway.
Because Regan isn’t one of South Lake Tahoe’s most heavily promoted beaches, you’ll typically find fewer people here than at some of the other lakefront spots. The neighborhood setting means it has a residential feel rather than a resort atmosphere. Parking is available near the beach entrance, and there are basic amenities including restrooms and picnic areas.
The lake water temperature peaks in late summer—usually around August—so if your dog isn’t keen on cold water, that’s when you’ll have the best conditions. Even then, Tahoe stays pretty chilly year-round. Check the city of South Lake Tahoe’s website for current conditions and any seasonal closures before heading out.
