Scotia Lodge, a 22-room historic hotel at the Northern entrance to Avenue of the Giants in Redwood State Park, reopened in July 2021 after restoration work. The location is genuinely excellent if you’re planning to explore the old-growth redwoods—you’re right at the gateway to the park’s main attractions. The lodge sits on a river flat, which gives it a different feel than many other accommodations in the area; there’s a sense of space and quiet that comes from being nestled beside water rather than tucked into a town.
The rooms are spacious, which matters when you’re traveling with a dog. You’re not cramped, and your dog has actual room to move around—important after a day of hiking or driving. Scotia is a small former lumber town, so the vibe is understated and low-key rather than touristy. The immediate surroundings are peaceful, which dogs tend to appreciate. You won’t have a lot of nightlife or restaurant options within walking distance, but that’s actually the point if you’re here to experience the redwoods.
Being at the entrance to Avenue of the Giants means easy access to some of the best hiking trails in Humboldt County. Rockefeller Forest Loop and other trails are nearby, which is really the main reason to stay here. The location gives you a head start on morning hikes before crowds arrive. If you’re driving from Southern California or the Bay Area, Scotia is far enough north that it feels genuinely remote—you’re not in a development with other hotels nearby.
This works best if you’re primarily interested in time among the old-growth trees rather than amenities. Bring food or plan to eat before arriving since restaurant options are limited. Check their website for current rates and reservation details before planning your trip.
