Seaside Beach sits about 6 miles north of Fort Bragg along a stretch of Mendocino County coastline that feels genuinely remote. The beach itself is wide and sandy, with plenty of room for dogs to run, and the big draw here is the off-leash access — you can let your dog loose to sprint through the surf and chase the waves without worrying about a leash.

The catch is important: dogs are only allowed off-leash north of the Ten Mile River, which marks the southern boundary of the beach. South of that river is off-limits for dogs because it’s protected habitat for snowy plovers, an endangered shorebird that nests there. Federal law protects this area, so it’s not negotiable. As long as you keep your dog on the northern section, you’re good.

Parking here can be tight, and the street outside gets busy, so plan to keep your dog on a leash during the walk from your car to the sand. Once you’re on the beach proper, you can let them loose. The waves are gentle enough that even dogs who aren’t strong swimmers can wade in and splash around safely. You’ll likely meet other dogs doing the same thing — it’s a social spot, especially on weekends.

One thing to know: bring your own waste bags. There are none provided, and keeping the beach clean matters, especially in an area this natural and less developed than some of the more popular coastal spots. The remoteness is part of what makes it special, but it also means fewer amenities.

Before you go, double-check the current off-leash rules online, since regulations can shift. Cell service can be spotty out here too, so don’t count on it if you need directions on the way back. The drive itself is scenic, winding through redwood country, so it’s worth making a half-day of it.
