Secluded behind high hedges and hidden pathways in Santa Barbara, the Secret Garden Inn & Cottages sits quietly on its own grounds, easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there. Originally built in 1905 as a private residence, the property was reopened as the Blue Quail in 1980 and is now owned and run by Dominique Hannaux, who has maintained its intimate, tucked-away character.
The location works well if you’re exploring Santa Barbara with your dog. State Street with its shops is walkable, and you can bike to many of the city’s restaurants and attractions. The property itself has enough greenery that you won’t feel like you’re in the middle of town—there’s actual quiet here, which matters when you have a dog who might otherwise be stressed by constant foot traffic.
Each cottage has its own private deck, and the grounds feature mature trees like persimmons and avocados that create natural shade. Breakfast comes to you on your own patio, so you’re not managing your dog in a shared dining room. The gardens are genuinely pleasant to walk through, and your dog can move around without being on a leash the entire time you’re there.
Dogs are welcome, but you’ll need to arrange this in advance. The pet-friendly cottages are the Garden, Hummingbird, Oriole, Kingfisher, Nightingale, and Wood Thrush. Santa Barbara’s Mediterranean climate means year-round dog-friendly weather, though summers can get warm. If you’re planning to spend time on nearby beaches or exploring the hills inland, this is a reasonable base where you can actually relax between outings rather than just sleeping before heading out again.
