Shanks Ponderosa House in Mariposa is a solid log home that works really well as a base for exploring Yosemite and the surrounding Gold Country area. The place sleeps up to 10 people comfortably, which makes it great if you’re bringing along extended family or friends who want to split the cost of a mountain getaway. Inside you’ll find high-end wood furniture throughout and the kind of setup that actually makes a longer stay pleasant rather than cramped—the owners clearly thought through what people need when they’re staying put for a few days.
The big selling point for us was that dogs are genuinely welcome here. We were able to bring our dog along without any of the usual hassle or hand-wringing about whether we were breaking some unspoken rule. There’s plenty of land around the property where your dog can move around, and from here you’re positioned well for day trips into Yosemite or exploring the quieter hiking trails in the immediate area around Mariposa.
The log cabin aesthetic actually delivers—it feels like a real mountain house rather than someone’s attempt at rustic charm. High ceilings and good natural light make the interior feel less cave-like than some vacation rentals in this price range. If you’re planning a group trip where having a full kitchen and multiple bedrooms matters, this beats splitting up between several hotel rooms.
One thing worth knowing: it’s about 45 minutes to Yosemite’s main entrance, so this works better if you want a home base where you can relax in the evenings rather than a place right at the park gates. The Mariposa area itself has some decent local restaurants and shops if you want to spend an evening in town, though it’s pretty quiet compared to what you’d find closer to the valley.
