Shell Beach

Shell Beach, Sonoma Coast State Park, Bodega Bay, California 94923

(707) 875-3483

Shell Beach sits between Jenner and Bodega Bay along Highway One, a working stretch of coast where you’ll see fishing boats and real tidal pool action rather than manicured attractions. The beach is genuinely popular with schools—you might encounter a class of kids with clipboards and nets studying starfish and anemones, which gives you a sense of how rich the marine life actually is here.

The shoreline itself is rocky and dramatic, with lots of nooks to explore during low tide. Beachcombing is solid here, and you’ll find shells, sea glass, and other debris that tells you this is a lived-in part of the coast. The views north and south along the Sonoma coastline are worth the drive alone, especially if the weather’s clear.

Bring your dog—leashes are required and capped at six feet, which keeps things manageable for everyone sharing the beach. The rocky terrain means your dog will get a real workout navigating the shoreline, which most dogs enjoy once they figure out the footing. Water access is straightforward, and plenty of dogs get in the ocean here, though the current and waves deserve respect.

Timing matters. Low tide is when tidepooling works best, so check a tide table before you head out. High tide can limit beach access significantly. The parking situation is small and fills up on weekends, so going early or on a weekday makes the experience less crowded. Bring water for your dog since there’s nothing nearby—you’re pretty far from Bodega Bay proper here. The wind can pick up in the afternoon, which affects how comfortable the beach feels, especially if you’re planning to stay several hours.
