Shelter Cove RV Campground in Whitethorn sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, about as close to the edge of California as you can get on Humboldt County’s dramatic coastline. The 103 spaces spread across the property accommodate both RVs and tents, and the views from many sites are genuinely spectacular—you’re watching the ocean from your campsite, not driving ten minutes to see it.

Dogs are welcome here, which makes sense given the location. You can walk your dog along the bluff, explore the nearby beach access, and generally let them stretch out after a drive. The campground itself is pretty straightforward—functional spaces without a lot of frills, but that’s actually fine when you’re surrounded by those kinds of views. The real appeal is the setting, not theme park amenities.

The on-site deli and store handle the basics well. You can grab food without having to drive back into town (which matters out here, where town is legitimately far away), and there are supplies and souvenirs if you forgot something or want a memento. The deli keeps things simple but practical for people who want to eat without cooking over a camp stove.

Shelter Cove itself is a working fishing village, so you’ll see commercial boats, smell salt and diesel, and get the authentic North Coast experience rather than a sanitized version. The road in is narrow and winding—it’s not the fastest route anywhere, but that’s part of why it stays quieter than other coastal spots. If you’re driving an RV, you’ll want to take your time. The community center and nearby beach are walkable from the campground, and low tide reveals tide pools worth exploring with your dog. This is a good base for experiencing the raw, less-crowded side of the California coast. Bring fog layers and expect variable weather, even in summer.
