Skyline Trail

Forest Road 2N10 and 2N06 Intersection, Big Bear Lake, California 92314

(909) 382-2790

The Skyline Trail in Big Bear Lake is a scenic 15-mile route that runs along the mountainous ridge of the South Shore. This dog-friendly trail welcomes leashed dogs and offers an incredible experience for both hikers and riders. The elevation and exposure mean you’ll want to bring plenty of water—the ridge can get hot, and there’s limited shade in sections, so your dog will appreciate frequent breaks.

As you traverse this path, you’ll find stunning views of Mt. San Gorgonio to the south and glimpses of the lake to the north. On clearer days, the vista stretches far enough that you can really understand why Big Bear sits at over 7,000 feet. The trail largely parallels the 2N10 road, which means you have genuine flexibility in how you approach it. You don’t have to commit to the full 15 miles—many people park at different access points and do 4 to 8-mile sections instead, which is realistic if you’re bringing a dog who might not be conditioned for a full day at elevation.

The South Shore location keeps things quieter than some of the more popular Big Bear hiking spots. You’ll see other hikers and the occasional mountain biker, but it doesn’t feel crowded. The ridge itself is fairly exposed, so weather can change quickly up there. That said, the views make the wind worthwhile.

The trail works for different fitness levels because of those multiple access points along the 2N10. Whether you’re looking at a shorter 5-mile loop with your dog or you’re experienced hikers wanting to test yourselves, the Skyline Trail accommodates both. Just remember that altitude affects dogs just like it affects people—if your dog isn’t used to elevation, start with one of the shorter sections and see how they handle it before attempting the whole ridge.
