Summerdale Campground sits just 1.5 miles from Yosemite National Park’s south entrance in Fish Camp, making it a genuinely convenient base if you want to explore the park without staying inside it. The location works well for dogs since you’re close enough to hit major Yosemite trails early in the day, then retreat to quieter surroundings for the evening.
The campground occupies a meadow surrounded by fir, cottonwood, and cedar trees, with wildflowers scattered throughout depending on the season. It’s a prettier setting than a lot of roadside campgrounds, and the elevation means summers here stay significantly cooler than lower elevations. If you’re camping with a dog in July or August, that temperature difference matters.
The RV sites and tent areas are straightforward and well-maintained, with clean restroom facilities throughout. Big Creek runs nearby and offers decent fishing if that interests you, though honestly most people here are using this as a jumping-off point for Yosemite. Dogs are welcome at the campground itself, which is the main thing you need to know—just keep in mind that Yosemite has specific dog policies for trails and areas, so you’ll want to check those separately before you go.
The Fish Camp area has a few small shops and restaurants within a few minutes’ drive, so you’re not completely isolated if you need supplies or want to eat out. The drive into Yosemite from here is short enough that you can do a full day in the park and still have evening time back at camp with your dog. If you’re planning multiple days in Yosemite with a dog, this location saves you the hassle of finding lodging inside the park itself.
