Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail

American Riv Bike Trl, Sacramento, California 95833

The Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail winds 32 miles from Discovery Park in Folsom all the way to Old Sacramento, hugging the American River the entire way. It’s the kind of trail where you can do a quick mile or two near Folsom, or commit to a longer day if you’re up for it.

The path itself is well-maintained and popular with joggers, cyclists, and walkers, so you’ll have company on weekends but usually quiet stretches on weekday mornings. The American River keeps things cool even on hot Sacramento days, and there’s plenty of shade from trees along the banks. We found the trail especially nice in the sections closer to Folsom, where the river feels more natural and less urban.

What works well for dogs is the sheer length and multiple access points. You’re not locked into one starting spot—you can jump on near various parks throughout the Sacramento area and tailor your distance. The trail is mostly flat, which is good for older dogs or those still building endurance. During warmer months, the shade is genuinely helpful, though you’ll want to bring water since hydration matters for both of you on longer stretches.

Keep your dog leashed throughout—it’s required and makes sense given the volume of other people using the trail. The trail also doubles as a bike commute route for many Sacramento residents, so staying predictable on the path keeps everyone safe and happy.

One thing to know: the trail is popular enough that peak times (especially weekends and early mornings) can get crowded. If you prefer a quieter experience, an afternoon weekday walk in the middle of the week tends to be more peaceful. The Folsom end tends to feel less congested than the Old Sacramento side.

Check current pet policies at the specific parks where you plan to access the trail before you go, since regulations can vary slightly by location.
