Towne Trail

Town Trail, Big Bear Lake, California 92315

(909) 382-2790

Starting at Snow Summit, the Towne Trail in Big Bear Lake is a dog-friendly path that meanders through the south shore woodlands, offering splendid views of the lake and the north shore. The trail itself is well-maintained and relatively easy to navigate, making it accessible even if your dog isn’t an experienced hiker.

As you follow the trail through the pine forest, you’ll reach a fork at 2N08 where the route really opens up depending on what you want from your day. If you’re after a quick outing, you can loop back here for a 2.5-mile round trip—perfect if your dog tends to tucker out quickly or you just want a morning walk before heading into town. The scenery alone makes this option worthwhile, with lake views breaking through the trees at several points.

If you want something longer, taking the left turn at the fork lets you ascend the fire road and connect to other trails in the Big Bear system. This gives you the flexibility to extend your hike significantly if you’ve got an energetic dog who needs real miles under their paws. Going right at the fork takes you down toward Knickerbocker Road near The Village, which is handy if you want to end your hike closer to restaurants or shops.

The trail stays relatively cool thanks to the forest cover, which is genuinely appreciated during warmer months. Keep your dog on a leash throughout—Big Bear takes that seriously, and it’s the smart move anyway with other hikers and wildlife in the area. The packed dirt surface is comfortable for paws, and the elevation is high enough that you’ll notice the crisp mountain air. Stop at one of the overlooks to catch your breath and let your dog have water if you’ve brought some along.
