The Tuolumne Grove Trailhead offers one of the most accessible ways to experience giant sequoias with your dog, located in Tuolumne Meadows about an hour’s drive from Yosemite Valley. The main trail is a 2.5-mile descent that winds through a grove of massive sequoias, and what makes it popular with dog owners is that it’s far less crowded than many other Yosemite-area hikes. You’ll pass through the trees at a manageable pace, and your dog gets to experience the scale of these ancient giants without the steep elevation gain you’d find on other park trails.
The trailhead sits at a reasonable elevation, so even dogs who don’t regularly hike at high altitude can handle the descent without struggle. The path is mostly dirt and packed earth, shaded by the sequoia canopy throughout. On a warm day, that shade matters—there aren’t a lot of water sources along the route, so bring enough for both of you. The real highlight comes about halfway down when you’ll encounter a historic cabin and tunnel carved directly through one of the giant sequoias, which dogs seem to find as interesting as people do.
The hike itself is straightforward, but the return trip going uphill is noticeably harder than the descent, so plan your energy accordingly. Early morning is your best bet for avoiding the afternoon crowds and hitting the trail when it’s cooler. The parking area can fill up during peak summer season, particularly on weekends.
The grove doesn’t have the same visitor infrastructure as some other Yosemite spots, so pack out what you pack in and expect minimal services. This trailhead works especially well for dogs who enjoy forest hiking but need something less technical than backcountry routes. Check current pet policies and any temporary closures before heading out, since conditions and regulations can change seasonally.
