The Villa Grove Trailhead off Moonridge Road provides access to one of Big Bear’s pebble plain habitats — a globally rare ecosystem found only in the Big Bear Valley. Easy to moderate trails lead through open meadows of rocky, clay-based soil where tiny endemic wildflowers thrive. The nearby Sawmill Pebble Meadow Loop covers roughly 3.7 miles with about 550 feet of elevation gain, winding through pine forest and across the pebble plain itself. For a shorter walk, simply explore the initial trail sections at your own pace without committing to the full loop.
Dogs are welcome on these trails and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet, following San Bernardino National Forest regulations. The gentle terrain is easy on paws, though the open meadow sections can be warm and exposed during the heat of summer, so morning hikes work best. The real draw here is how different this landscape feels compared to other Big Bear trails — you’re walking across this unusual rocky plain that looks almost otherworldly, especially when the wildflowers are out. Stay on designated paths with your dog to protect the fragile pebble plain plants, which have adapted to these specific conditions over centuries.
Bring water, as there are no sources along the trail. To reach the trailhead, take Moonridge Road south from Big Bear Lake and turn onto Villa Grove Avenue — about a 15-minute drive. Street-side parking is available at the trailhead. A National Forest Adventure Pass may be required depending on your parking location, so check before you go. The best time to visit is spring through early summer, roughly April to June, when the rare wildflowers are in bloom and the meadows are at their most interesting. If your dog does well on mellow hikes with steady footing and you want something quieter than the main Big Bear Loop trails, this is worth the drive.
