Wawona Campground sits in the southern part of Yosemite National Park, about a 45-minute drive from the valley floor. With 93 regular campsites plus group and horse sites, it’s one of the park’s larger campgrounds and a solid base for exploring this section of the park with your dog.
The campground operates year-round, though the reservation system changes seasonally. From April through September, you’ll need to book ahead online—these months fill up quickly. October through March switches to first-come, first-served for the A loop, which has about 20 sites and costs $14 per night instead of the usual $20. Horse sites are available only April through September and require calling 877/444-6777 to reserve.
Your dog can walk with you on the paved roads and walkways throughout the campground itself, and Yosemite’s regulations allow pets on fully paved surfaces in Wawona plus the Meadow Loop Trail in that area. This means you’ll have some walking options right from camp, though the restrictions are pretty tight—no trails, no wilderness areas, no unpaved roads. The Meadow Loop is your best bet for a proper walk with your dog beyond the campground pavement.
Keep in mind the park’s pet rules are strict. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and you cannot leave your dog tied up or unattended anywhere. Bring your own waste bags since none are provided. If your dog is left alone, park rangers will remove and impound them.
The group campsite accommodates 13-30 people and costs $40 per night if you’re bringing a larger group. Regular sites max out at 6 people and cost $20 nightly during peak season. If you’re coming in the quieter months and don’t mind the uncertainty, the first-come, first-served option in October through March can save you money and hassle with reservations.
