Windmill Cafe

21231 East Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, California 95062

(831) 464-4698

The Windmill Cafe’s patio wraps around the building with both covered and open sections, allowing you to choose between sun or shade depending on the weather. Facing East Cliff Drive, the setup draws regulars who bring their dogs consistently, and staff recognize frequent visitors. The menu includes sandwiches, salads, and coffee drinks suitable for a casual meal while your dog sits on the patio tiles beside you. The location sits along the eastern stretch of Santa Cruz’s coastal drive, with Pleasure Point Beach less than a mile south if you want to combine a meal with a walk. Weather on East Cliff can shift quickly—even when it’s warm elsewhere in Santa Cruz, the marine layer keeps things cool here, so the covered section becomes valuable.

Dogs are welcome on the patio year-round. Staff brings water bowls without prompting. Dogs must stay outside; the indoor seating and counter area are off-limits to dogs. The cafe does not offer a specific dog menu, but staff will serve plain chicken or other simple proteins on the side if you order them. Parking is street-side along East Cliff, usually available even during summer months.

The patio faces the street rather than the ocean, so it lacks dramatic water views but benefits from fewer wind gusts than fully exposed spots nearby. During lunch hours the patio can fill up; late afternoon tends to be quieter. Hours run through late afternoon most days, closing around 5 PM, making this solidly a breakfast and lunch destination. Bring a leash and assume other dogs might be nearby on the patio.
