Wright's Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park stretches for 17 miles from Bodega Head to Vista Trail, offering a serious amount of coastline to explore with your dog. The beach itself is a mix of sandy stretches and rocky outcrops with natural arches and coves tucked along the way, so there’s plenty to discover beyond just walking the shore.

Dogs are allowed on leash here, which means you can actually spend real time on the sand without worrying about restrictions. The ocean breezes are noticeably cooler than inland areas, making it genuinely comfortable even on warmer days. By midday the fog usually clears, so you get actual views of the coast rather than staring into gray soup.

The real advantage of Wright’s Beach is the multiple access points along Highway 1, so you’re not locked into one parking area. You can try different sections depending on what appeals to you that day. The fishing and shell hunting are legitimate activities if you want something beyond just walking, and the beach is wide enough that you’re not fighting crowds even on weekends.

The wider park has trails for hiking if you want to move beyond the sand. Just keep your dog leashed, particularly in areas where snowy plovers are nesting—these are protected birds, and their habitat needs to stay off-limits.

Pack a picnic and plan for a few hours minimum. The scenery is the real draw here, not amenities, so there’s no nearby food or services to rely on. Check current pet policies before you go since coastal areas sometimes shift their rules seasonally, especially around bird nesting areas. You’ll need to time your visit around tide levels too if you want reliable beach access for walking.
